Sophomore Fall --

November 21, 2008
Dear Sophomores,
It's almost 10th Week! I hope you all get a little rest and relaxation over the Thanksgiving holiday, as well as finishing those last assignments and studying for exams. And when they're over, I hope you have a wonderful time over the winter break.
But, before you go ...
Don't forget that while you're home over winter break is the best time to dig out your birth certificate or passport, apply for a passport if you don't have one (or if it is close to expiration), and double-check emergency contact numbers with your family. If you're planning to study abroad next year, make sure you pick up your study abroad application before you go, because break will be a better time to fill it out than early in January. Remember, long-term and extended-term applications will be due January 15th (Thursday of 2nd Week). If you're still trying to make a decision about where to go, talk it over with friends and family. I've appended some additional information about making decisions, picking up applications, and how you could get a free gift from the Center for International Programs (CIP) at the end of this message.
Also coming up in Winter quarter is Declaration of Major Day. This is a sort of department fair; all the departments will have representatives, you will sign up for your major (unless you have done that already by then), and do a little celebrating of an important milestone in your K career. If you're still unsure of what discipline you want to major in, now and early January are good times to be talking to faculty members about your interests and your options. And break is a good time to kick ideas around with family and friends and let your own thoughts on the subject simmer.
Yes, the sophomore year is a year with lots of decisions! Remember, though, that there are many resources available to you, including the Academic Resource Center, your advisor, the faculty, the CIP, the Counseling Center, the Chapel Program, and your Sophomore Class Dean (right, that would be me!).
Once again, best of luck during exams! Keep your mind sharp by making sure you get some sleep, some exercise, and some relaxation, and have a great break when you're done!
